I always think a maternity photoshoot at home is a good option. You can feel totally relaxed and the pictures will tell the story of your family in the most meaningful scenario.
If you already have kids, it’s even better. The kids tend to cooperate more, since they usually feel more comfortable at their homes. Besides a maternity photoshoot, you end up with a family session as well.
That was the case of this family. Theo is almost 4 years old and now he is waiting for his little brother, Martim. The shoot was at their new home, Theo could play with his little cars that he loves everywhere, even on his mother’s belly.
I’ve been photographing this family for almost 4 years. It’s so nice to watch them growing together and have the chance to participate. It is so nice to see the old pictures and how they are growing. It’s their story as a family that is in these pictures.
The other posts of this family:
- Theo newborn lifestyle photography, at their home, when Theo was a newborn
- Candid family session, outdoors, when Theo was 6 months old
- Family session at the park: this session was at the park when Theo was 1,5 years old
One question I am asked a lot is whether the scenes are directed by the photographer or not. Even though I ended up choosing some places at their home where the light or composition could help, specially during a maternity photoshoot at home, I like to leave them free to be themselves and wait for things to happen naturally. Sometimes I don’t interfere at all, and just follow what they want to do. This way I can capture more of their personalities and their home environment.
Besides that, I usually recommend to shoot at least one family portrait, even in sessions that are 100% documentary. Not a cheesy one, but choosing a place and light that is beautiful and register all family together has its worth.
