I simply love how much truth and real-life I can capture when I do a family photoshoot at home. So I always tend to tell my clients how amazing it can be, but I understand that it can have a lot of resistance.
Barbara reached out to me to photograph her family: she, her husband Jean and her daughter Lorena. Although she loves documentary photography and the idea of a family photoshoot at home, her first thought was a session outdoors. Especially because they are living in her parents’ house, so not in their own house or not the way they dreamt of. I often see people worried that their houses are small, not beautiful or not as they would like so they usually don’t consider a family photoshoot at home. But here I am again trying to show you that this is what matters the least. Your house is enough because it is real, and that’s beautiful.
We talked and I realized she wanted something meaningful that showed their lives as they are. I told her we could split the session in two and photograph at least a little of their family photoshoot at home. She agreed.
Bárbara wanted me to take their first professional photos since Lorena was born. Lorena was already one and a half years old, so she wanted it to be special.
We chose the end of the day and they just did the routines they normally do. Since they love to watch the sunset, we went to a place near their house and I also photographed them having fun there. All of this in a 2-hour session.
I could notice that Lorena was very comfortable and barely noticed my presence there. This usually happens when children are in the environment they are used to be and playing with their parents, as they do every day. Everything happens more naturally.
The result you can see below. Can you see how their connection matters so much more than the place they are in?
In the end, I think it was the best choice. And I think they agree with me. Here is Barbara’s testimonial after the session. I am so thrilled with her words. That’s why I love my work! <3
“You are just wonderful. Your sensitivity makes me want to cry. The photos tell our story, our life. There’s no way to describe it. This is much more than photography… I had never had professional photos of Lorena taken before, not even in a studio, nothing. And I will never forget when you said it was the best gift I could give her and I agree. I told you, you’re perfect at what you do. Wow, I’m impressed with your work, it’s fantastic! Thank you, thank you for every click!” Barbara
“I gave this teddy bear as a gift to Jean, right when I met him. I wrote a letter saying I was feeling he would be the father of my children. Then we gave the teddy bear to Lorena, it was the first decoration item of her room. So this picture means a lot to us.” Barbara
