I see documentary photography rather like a movie. Not a movie that tells the whole story of someone’s life. But a small slice. One story, one chapter. In a year, two, ten years time, life will have changed and then we’ll need a new chapter. But for now, it’s the one we have. It is something like that: although the days seem the same as the previous ones, life passes fast, the moments change.
And the movie I want to show today is this one from this great family. A family that started with two chemical engineers, Liliana and Fabio. Two people super calm persons. And if you know any engineers, you know most of them have straight and logical minds. Then their daughter Clarissa came. You might think that from such a union would come a calm and quiet girl, like her parents. But she is the opposite. It’s like a hurricane with infinite energy. She literally never stops. She has a strong personality and she is very interested in a lot of things related to art and expression.
I think the photos can express better what I mean. There are more pictures of her spinning or upside down than it would be expected, even from a child. And I think a daughter/son role is also that, putting your life upside down. And, amazingly, you can find a lot of fun upside down (and you wouldn’t have gone there if you hadn’t had kids).
I think paternity / maternity is a bit about teaching and learning. And I believe there is a great example here. A challenge that requires a lot of learning. I bet Clarissa teaches as much as she learns.
Here is my thanks to this beautiful family, for letting me enter their home to record a Saturday afternoon in their lives. I hope this little slice is a good way to keep this beautiful phase of life. So you do not forget how magical even the simplest days are through the eyes of a child.
